The Purpose of Using CAMAC

Electronic devices play an essential role in data acquisition in many physics laboratories. Unfortunately, for many years, most of the devices produced have been mutually incompatible. To use two devices produced by different manufacturers, an electronic interface is often needed. In large systems consisting of many devices, a large number of different interfaces is necessary. It takes time, effort, and money to design, produce, and install the interfaces. The result is space, time, and cost inefficiency. A data acquisition system can look like a mountain of metal boxes connected by a jungle of wires. It finally became obvious that a standardized system is necessary.

A standardized system has now been developed. It is call CAMAC, which stands for ``Computer Automated Measurement And Control.''
