Test Sequence

The tests are as follows:

  1. Check executive crate controller
  2. Look for branch couplers
  3. Figure out which branches and crates are on-line
  4. Test each on-line branch coupler
  5. Test each on-line crate controller on each branch, right after checking the branch coupler

After the program checks the executive crate controller, it looks for the branch coupler by checking each slot to see if the module has a crate address register (CAR) . The crate address register is an internal register used by the branch coupler to find crates, and does not exist in other modules. The program sends CAMAC commands to write numbers into the CAR and then reading it back. When that succeeds at a certain slot, then the program assumes there is a branch coupler.

After the program finds a branch coupler, it reads and interprets the stock register. That is how it finds out whether the branch is on-line, and which crates on the branch are on-line. If the branch is on-line, then the program checks the branch coupler. then it checks every crate controller on the branch.
