The CAMAC Crate System Architecture
The centre piece of the architecture is the system crate (executive crate). It contains the following:
- Executive crate controller
- Branch couplers
- Computer modules (e.g. interface to VAX, Starburst)
A branch highway extents from each branch coupler. Each highway is connected to a number of crates (1 to 7).
Each crate contains the following:
- Crate controller
- Data-collecting modules (such as analog-to-digital converters).
Note that not every branch and every crate that is connected need be used. Each branch and each crate has an on-line/off-line switch. When a branch or a crate is off-line, then it cannot be used.
